In part 4 of this series, we’re visiting the Southwest. The start of the New Year brings nice weather to this region.  This time of year is great for outdoor activities like hiking, site seeing, or trail walks. Here are some fun ideas for you.

Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City is the only state capital to have a working oil well in front of the Capitol Building.  Petunia #1 is the name of the working oil well. After a stroll to see it, grab a bite to eat at Oozie Mediterranean restaurant.  Oklahoma City’s restaurants, breweries, and taverns are open with 50% occupancy.  There is a mask mandate and the city is following the reopening guidelines recommended by the CDC which includes screening employees for symptoms like a fever. View the full OKC COVID-19 Guidelines here.  Oklahoma City has a variety of outdoor activities to experience without traveling outside of the city.  Check out OKC Outdoor Recreation for some ideas!

Golf anyone?  Phoenix has more than 200 golf courses in the city.  In 2013, the Phoenix Waste Management Open had 179,022 attendees, setting a world record for single day attendance. Check out more Phoenix Fun Facts here.  Arizona allows restaurants to be open with 50% occupancy and has worked with them to allow for more outdoor seating.  The state is requiring business to make sure that they take all necessary safety precautions to ensure the safety of their citizens.  Businesses are required to monitor their employee’s symptoms including daily temperature checks (source).  If golfing isn’t your thing but you enjoy the outdoors, try the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix.  There is a wide array of unique plants and trails for you to explore

San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas is home of The Alamo and some of the best Mexican cuisine in the United States. San Antonio businesses have made the pledge to make San Antonio Greater. SAfer. Together.   Businesses will make sure to use face coverings, practice social distancing, and conduct temperature checks as a part of this initiative.  All businesses are open with restaurants allowing 75% occupancy and bars allowing 50% occupancy.  Here are some great restaurants with outdoor seating in San Antonio.  After a nice lunch maybe take a walk on one of the trails in McAllister Park.

Santa Fe

Santa Fe is the oldest capital in the United States.  The city is currently classified as Red for the COVID-19 restrictions.  Therefore, these next travel tips are for you to save for later.  The red classification means that visitors must quarantine for 14 days, hotels and lodging are open at 40% occupancy and indoor dining is prohibited. You can monitor the Santa Fe reopening guidelines for your future trip. I

If you enjoy history, Santa Fe is the city for you.  Santa Fe is full of Native American ruins and architecture as well as centuries-old European style churches.  Here is a list of 12 Santa Fe historic sites.  It is also important to learn how to order your chili peppers in Santa Fe.  When the server ask would you like red or green…the answer is Christmas, according to this  Santa Fe Green Chili Guide.

Scottsdale is known for golfing and fancy resorts, but it also has a lot of great food and art.  Scottsdale offers a 60 minute self-guided walking tour that showcases 70 public art works in downtown Scottsdale.  Scottsdale, like Phoenix, is following the COVID-19 guidelines set in place by the governor of Arizona and the CDC.  Here is a list of COVID-19 safety protocols for Scottsdale businesses.  Restaurants and wineries are open with reduced occupancy.  If you decide to visit a winery call ahead as some wineries now require a reservation.  The Scottsdale Wine Trail has a few stops near the public art works tour. It’s a great opportunity to see it all.
